It is an adaptation from straight white sugar candies that were later modified to mimic the shape of a shepherd’s crook. In addition it is now colored with representative Christmas colors and flavored with peppermint. They serve as ornaments on the Christmas tree but they are so addictive that they almost always don’t remain on the tree till the end.
